The Tostrud Residence is an 11,000 square foot mountain home with spectacular views
of Cordillera, the Vail Valley, and the Gore Mountain Range.
The home is situated on a steep, narrow site, which called for a long, fairly narrow floor
plan with the primary entry from the side, at the lower level. The grand entry leads
visitors up to the formal living spaces of the home via a dramatic sweeping staircase
constructed of walnut and enclosed within a log-frame structure. The lower level includes
a large mud room, custom wine room, generous family room, walk-in cedar closet and
two large bedrooms with adjoining bathrooms. The lower level also connects with the
levels above via an elevator, which boasts custom butternut wood wall-to-wall paneling,
and a secondary stair, which is enclosed in a log-frame structure as well.
Arriving at the main level, one is struck by the large log trusses within the living room
that support the dramatic red tongue-and-groove ceiling above. The native moss-rock
stone fireplace and stone piers help define the scale and massing of this wonderful space.
The kitchen features a stone arch over the oven/range and adjacent fireplace, reminding
one of the days of artisan craftsmanship. The kitchen fireplace is only one of seven in
the home, all of which are carefully crafted to their individual spaces.
A covered patio with built-in stone benches and grilles are accessible off the breakfast
room in the kitchen. Other key components of the main level include: a powder room
with a custom-carved sandstone-slab pedestal sink with embedded fossilized leaves,
a vaulted log-framed private library, a master suite with its own fireplace and laundry
facilities, an oversized deck along the length of the home that contains a cozy fire pit
for cool Colorado mountain nights, and an outdoor spa within a sandstone patio. The
upper level of the home consists of a third bedroom, and a game room loft overlooking
the spectacular living room below.
