This custom residence was designed for one of the last remaining parcels in Birnam
Wood, a private golf community in the village of Montecito, near Santa
Barbara, California. The site borders a golf course on the south and overlooks the
fairway to an ocean view.
With this home the clients wished to create a home which was casual in its nature
and reminiscent of editerranean Architecture. The region of the Mediterranean
which the residence tries to emulate is Provence. The climate of Provence allows for
the growing of grapes, olives, lavender and outdoor living, which is also known for
a particular style of architecture. The climate in Santa Barbara, California nurtures
a similar lifestyle. The clients wished to create a home that lives both indoors and
outdoors. The verandas, trellis, and covered patios, intend to create “outdoor retreats”
and “outdoor living rooms”.
The residence is 5600sq ft. with a two-car garage and a basement that boasts of a wine
cellar. The living areas are to be vaulted with exposed wood trusses and wood flooring.
