The 2,300 square foot main house and 1,500 square foot guest house that comprise the beach house work together to compose their own beach enclave in Mussel Shoals, midway between Santa Barbara and Ventura. The houses are perched above a protective sea wall overlooking Rincon Point, one of the most coveted surf spots in Southern California. The houses were designed as “bookends” in a contemporary beach vernacular, combining stucco, stone veneer, metal and glass.

The gently curving metal roofs emulate the rolling ocean swells. The northern elevation presents a solid facade, while the southern elevation opens with broad expanses of glass to capture the entirety of the ocean and island views. Although the houses are separate, they share a common entry courtyard and are designed to function as a single retreat for the Otto family. Cantilevered decks float above the sea wall and connect the primary living spaces of the two houses for entertaining. There is also a large second deck on the guest house for more intimate groups to enjoy the outdoor fireplace, and take in the California sunsets.
